Understanding EFT: Growth, Connection, and Restoration Through Tapping

What is it?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often referred to as “Tapping,” is a gentle, evidence-based mind-body tool designed to help you process negative emotions, clear stress, and regulate your nervous system.

Think of EFT similar to acupuncture or acupressure, but completely non-invasive. By gently tapping on specific meridian (energy) points on your face and body while focusing on a particular worry or physical sensation, you send a calming signal directly to your brain.

How does it work?

When you experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, your body’s survival response (the amygdala) gets stuck in a loop of “fight, flight, or freeze.” This internal stress can disrupt your body’s functioning and display as symptoms, or repetitive thoughts.

EFT acts as a circuit breaker for that stress loop. During a session, we focus on what you are feeling while tapping on specific points. This sends a physical message to your brain that you are safe, allowing your nervous system to fully relax and process the emotion.

What Can EFT Help With?

EFT is a highly versatile tool because it bridges the connection between your mind and body. At GCR Wellness, I use EFT to help clients navigate a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Anxiety & Overwhelm: Quieting a racing mind and restoring a sense of calm.
  • Phobias & Fears: Shifting deep-seated subconscious triggers.
  • Trauma: Safely clearing old memories and emotional blocks.
  • Stress & Burnout: Releasing physical tension and chronic exhaustion held in the body.
  • Chronic Pain & Physical Symptoms: Your symptoms are your body’s way of communicating. EFT helps decode those messages and soothe physical flare-ups.
  • Neurodivergent Support: Helping individuals with ADHD manage sensory and emotional overstimulation.

What to Expect in a Session

Working with an EFT practitioner is entirely client-led, collaborative, and entirely safe. We use video call to connect so you can remain in your own, comfortable space.

  1. The Discussion: We begin by talking about the specific issue, emotion, or physical sensation you want to focus on.
  2. The Tapping Process: I will guide you through the process, showing you exactly where to tap on yourself while we use specific phrases to acknowledge how you feel.
  3. The Release: As we tap, you will notice the intensity of the stress, pain, or anxiety beginning to drop, leaving you feeling profoundly relaxed and grounded.
The Science: Backed by Research

While tapping feels deeply relaxing, it is a clinically proven mind-body therapy backed by over 100 peer-reviewed studies and recognized by major psychological organizations worldwide.

Here is exactly what happens to your body and brain during an EFT session:

  • Reduces Stress Hormones: A replicated landmark clinical trial showed that a single hour of EFT tapping lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) by an average of 43%—more than double the reduction seen from traditional talk therapy alone (Stapleton et al., 2020).
  • Quiets the Brain’s Alarm System: Brain imaging reveals that stimulating these meridian points sends a physical calming signal directly to your brain. This instantly deactivates your “fight-or-flight” survival response allowing reconsolidation of a memory or emotional response  (Feinstein D., 2025).
  • Improves Physical Health: Clinical data published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that EFT creates measurable physical shifts, including lower blood pressure, reduced resting heart rate, and a 113% boost in immune system markers (Bach et al., 2019).
